Domain and Hosting Information

Before we get into tips on how on choosing your host and domain, I wanted to explain the difference between the two just in case it has you confused. The easiest way to look at it is by using the infographic to the left. If you imagine you are building an online home for your business then you can compare your website to the physical home itself, your domain as the physical address that visitors will use to get to your home, and your host as the plot of land that your home sits on.

It is also important to note that just as no two homes are exactly alike, neither are two websites. This is why I like to provide consultations to get an accurate idea of what your website will need and in turn give you an accurate price and time frame for the site to be completed.

Now let’s get into some tips for finding the right domain…

Now let’s get into some tips for finding the right domain…

Choosing a domain name is one of the very first steps to getting your website going. If you are unfamiliar with the process, you might be surprised by how challenging it can be. Your domain name will affect how visible your website is in various search engines and it will also either encourage or discourage visitors based on some of the tips below. As if that isn’t already a big enough task, you will find that many domain names are already purchased so be prepared to get creative.

  • Choose a domain name that is easy to remember and easy to spell
  • Generally, shorter domain names are better because they are easy to type and easy to remember
  • Choose a domain name that includes keywords applicable to your business and/or location information (ex: chicagocreditrepair.com)
  • Whenever possible, try to get a .com extension for the purposes of credibility

Now let’s look a bit closer at choosing a good host for your website…

There are a lot of choices when it comes to selecting a hosting provider. It can be a little overwhelming at first but I’m going to assume your needs are pretty basic if you are just starting out. If so, most hosts will probably be able to support your website so you don’t need to worry about too many technicalities. Here are a few things to consider when shopping for a host:

  • Finding a host that has good uptime scores is crucial. When your site is down you are losing money. The number one job of your web host is to make sure your website is up and running at all times.
  • Research the company and check reviews. There is no one size fits all when it comes to hosts. You’ll have to decide what your website needs are and that will help direct you on what host to choose.
  • Customer service is a big one! It is almost inevitable that at some point you will have questions or needs from the hosting provider. You’ll want a host who responds promptly and efficiently.

Personally, I use Siteground.com for most of my clients and have had a great experience with them so far. As part of my website packages, I assist in the domain and hosting purchasing if needed.
